I did a Laugh All Night comedy concert Saturday night at Pinewood Presbyterian Church in Middleburg, Florida. It was a riot! The crowd was energetic and the church staff was so kind and friendly….the kind of church I would attend if I lived in the area.

The show is designed for the whole family and since there were so many kids in attendance, most sat down near the front. As the show came to a close…I noticed that a lot of them had begun to creep toward the stage and created a little people mosh pit! Then, in this amazing God moment, I invited them to come join me on the steps so I could briefly remind them what Christmas was all about. Finally, we all bowed our heads and closed our eyes and thanked God for His kindness.

I am so thankful for this picture. For the time I shared with families that night. For the few sweet moments I was blessed to share with the kids. I choked up as I prayed thanking God that he sent a child…HIS child (like the ones that were sitting around me on stage that night)..into the world. That is why we laugh, love and celebrate Christmas.

I hope you do the same this season….

Dear David,

I want to thank you so much for the best humor that I have ever heard. Several of the pastors had mentioned that they were a little uncomfortable with a comedian when they heard that I had scheduled one for our Christmas party, but you dispelled all that doubt and fear with your clean humor which went to the heart. I don’t think I have ever seen those folks laugh so hard. They were literally ready to roll on the floor.

You know people well and are a master at bringing home the words that speak to the vulnerable places of our lives. I will never have a problem recommending you and will be faithful to use your name whenever anyone is looking for outstanding Christian comedy.

Some entertainers work with an agent or a manager. Some have what they call a “street team”… in other words family, friends and fans help who help get the word out when that performer is coming to a nearby city.

The next few weeks have me traveling quite a bit. I have speaking engagements where the only thing each crowd has in common, is they are looking for clean comedy. Friday, June 3rd, I will be speaking to the staff at the University of Wisconsin (Osh Kosh campus), Sunday, June 5th, St Luke Church in Decatur, Indiana and then June 8-15, we take a team of 43 people on our annual week-long mission trip to the Dominican Republic serving with New Missions.

We live in a day and age where laughter is a MUST. We must laugh…or we cry. Both emotions are important but laughter seems to make us feel a little better. I prefer to laugh so much that I cry.

I’m also proud to say that the comedy I perform is family friendly. The material that I use at a civic event, fund-raiser or convention is also what I use for a family night at a church. Clean comedy that is good cannot be labeled.

I love it when a pastor asks me to speak at their church on Sunday morning. I call it “comedy with content”. Picture that individual who hasn’t stepped in a sanctuary in years and they happen to be sitting in the pew the day I’m speaking. The harder I make them laugh, the farther I can reach into their heart. And the content is designed for the whole family.

I have a few local events coming up in my home state that I would love for you to attend. The River, a church in Fort Wayne, Indiana, has invited me to speak at their Sunday morning service on May 22nd and then return for a night of comedy on May 28th. I met him but don't really know him.

During spring break, I took our daughter Hannah and her good friend Sara, to Disney World for a day. Betsy, my wife, thought it would be best to stay behind and minister to the beach. As I drove the girls to Disney that morning, I could envision the 3 of us riding rides…the two of them in a cart with their hands in the air laughing and sharing the moment, while I sat in the cart behind them with another lonely father.

Half of North America was at the park that day and after a few hours of being run over by wheelchairs and strollers, I limped to a bench and suggested the girls walk by themselves for a bit while I tried to stop the bleeding from my heels.

I love people watching and listening in on conversations, so the time on a bench alone for a few hours while the girls mingled with Mickey, would not be a problem.

After a while, I decided to bite the bullet and pay $87.33 for 5 ounces of water. I’m standing in line waiting when I hear two women behind me say, “I think that’s him. Go ask him. No…really, its him. Just go up and say hello.” They make their way around me and walk up to none other than….Cameron Tucker!!! Cam…from Modern Family! “Cam” is actor Eric Stonestreet.

Eric appeared to be enjoying his day at Disney with either a girlfriend or wife and another couple. Wearing black sunglasses, a dark polo shirt and jeans, Eric, for the most part, was able to walk through the throng of people relatively unnoticed.

I waited until the women behind me had walked away and decided I would jump in next. I love the show and think the “Cameron” character is hilarious so I went for it! “Excuse me…”, I said, “I hate to bother you but my family loves you and your show. A picture with you would mean more to me than a picture with Goofy. Do you mind?”

He agreed and his friend used my phone to take the picture. Eric even had to show his friend how to use MY phone and instructed him in a way, for just a brief moment, sounded like the character he portrays. “Yea…the button is right there in the middle…just give it a push…” he said with a slight lisp and his pinky finger pointing upward.

I thanked him and almost asked if I could join his party for the rest of the day. I’m sure he wouldn’t mind. What a thrill it would have been to find Hannah and Sara and say, “Look who I ran into?!!”

That moment was so exciting for me. This is a guy we have watched on TV every week for the past two seasons. I know his character, what he likes, the things he hates and I can recite his greatest lines. But the bottom line is this: I don’t really KNOW the man.

Do we make the same statement about people in our own lives? I know him or her. We’ve been friends for years. We chat. We are facebook friends. But do we really connect with each other the way we did before cell phones became attached to the end of our arms?

Get to know your family and friends. Become reacquainted with them. Fix dinner tonight for your spouse and kids and engage them in conversation with the cell phones tucked away in another room.

Chuck Swindoll says, “The reason God gave us two ears and one mouth…is so we can listen more than we speak.”

Cherish those laughs over dinner tonight. And don’t forget to keep the TV turned off….unless its “Modern Family”.

There are a few moments in life that make you feel like you are living at 1,200 feet in the air. They are breath-taking, full of excitement and make you never want to come down, type moments.

This picture was literally (taken with my phone!) a 1,200 feet in the air, para-sailing kind of moment for Alex and myself. He happened to be on 2 week leave from the army and we were lucky enough to spend part of our spring break with him in Florida. It’s a moment with him I will treasure for a long time.

We took him to the airport this morning so he could finish out his tour in Iraq. Until he returns in August, I will cherish this short ride we had together.

My prayer today for you is this: No matter how old, or young your children may be…take the time to create “moments” with them. The simple acts in life can be the most memorable. A walk, a bike-ride, a short road trip. Anything that creates conversation… especially a good laugh.
